To resolve this issue, check the time and date and set it to the correct value before attempting to re-enable Windows Defender.

We know it sounds strange, but most Windows system features are time and date sensitive. An incorrect date or time can cause your Windows operating system to behave abnormally.

3. Use of professional security software

4. Updating Windows

  1. Go to the Start menu, select Settings and choose Update and Security.
  2. Go to Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Make sure you keep Windows up-to-date with Windows Update, as this can cause problems with Windows Defender. Make sure all security software is updated regularly.

We recommend that you perform a full Windows update, then open Windows Defender and perform the update from there.

5. Change the proxy server

  1. Press Windows + X and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Enter one of the following options:  NETSH WINHTTP SET PROXY 1.1.1:8080 or NETSH WINHTTP SET PROXY MYPROXY.NET:8080
  3. Reboot the system and see if it works.

These three common scenarios can cause problems with Windows Defender, but there are other, less common scenarios that can also cause problems.

For example, incorrect zone settings in Internet Explorer can cause problems, but you can easily correct them by resetting Internet Explorer to its default values.

Remember that Windows Defender cannot be updated if you are using a proxy server. If this is the case, you need to make minor changes to your proxy server.

6. Disable third-party antivirus software

Windows Defender does not work with third-party antivirus programs. Like all antivirus software, they don’t work well together.

Therefore, if you want to use Windows Defender as your primary security option, you must disable all third-party antivirus programs installed on your computer.

7. Start SFC scan

  1. Go to Search, type cmd, and open the command prompt as administrator.
  2. Type the following line and press Enter: sfc/scannow
  3. Wait until the process is complete.
  4. Restart your computer.

8. Start DISM

  1. Go to Search, type cmd, and open the command prompt as administrator.
  2. Type the following command at the command prompt:
    • DISM.exe /Online /Image cleaning /Health restoration
  3. If DISM cannot retrieve the files online, try using a USB stick or an installation DVD. Load the medium and enter the following command:
    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
  4. Make sure you replace the following path on your DVD or USB: C:/Restore/Source/Windows

9. Safety Center Service Reset

  1. Go to the search page, type services.msc and open Services.
  2. Find safety.
  3. Right-click on the Security Center service and go to Reset.
  4. Restart your computer.

Finally, if none of the above solutions work, we try restarting the security center service. Hopefully Windows Defender will work again after this.
